Celebrating Motherhood: Embracing Life Beyond the Routine

By: Jola Cruise

This Mother’s Day, let’s shine a light on what we do as mothers and how we grow and thrive alongside our children. As a relationship coach and a mom in the bustling Orange County, I’ve seen firsthand how easy it is to get swept up in our children’s demanding schedules. But through my own experiences, I’ve learned that embracing our personal joys and adventures is just as crucial as any scheduled activity.

Motherhood means more than managing endless tasks—it’s about finding joy in the journey and sharing that joy with our families. Each year, my family and I participate in a Spartan race to celebrate my birthday. It’s not about reaching the finish line first but about participating together, getting muddy and enjoying every laugh-filled moment. These experiences remind us that life with our children should be a shared adventure, not just a series of spectator events.

The shift from spectator to participant became real for me one winter when I traded my unsuccessful attempts at snowboarding for skiing. That decision transformed our winter holidays from me watching on the sidelines to swooshing down slopes alongside my kids. Similarly, joining a parkour class with my children pushed me out of my comfort zone and into a vibrant, supportive community where I found friendship and fitness, proving it's never too late to start a new adventure.

Incorporating dads in daily family activities, no matter how busy they may be, also plays a crucial role in creating a loving, connected family environment where everyone contributes. We don't always need to be the ones doing things; leaning on our partners can bring balance and enrich family dynamics, demonstrating a united front of mutual support and care. This principle of sharing responsibilities is something I emphasize in my classes, especially for moms who struggle to shed some of their burdens. Teaching strategies for effectively involving dads help to lighten their load and ensure that both parents can actively participate in nurturing a harmonious home life. This shared responsibility not only fosters a stronger bond between partners but also models healthy relationship dynamics for our children.

Moreover, embracing our passions and taking time for ourselves shows our children that adulthood can be filled with adventure, growth, and happiness. It’s about saying yes to new experiences and showing our kids that life doesn't end with motherhood—it flourishes.

So this Mother's Day, let’s toast to the mothers who aren't just surviving but thriving. Let’s celebrate the joy, the lessons, and the richness that comes from embracing life, not just for our children but with them. The greatest gift we can give isn’t just love and care—it’s showing them how to love life passionately and joyfully, just as we do. Here’s to all the moms who teach, not by words, but by living boldly and joyfully each day.
