Waikiki has a rhythm all its own: the gentle sound of ocean swells at dawn, the energy of Kalakaua Avenue, and the unmistakable spirit of a beach culture that has drawn travelers to Oahu for generations. Yet just beyond that energy, at the edge of Waikiki Beach, is a place that feels remarkably removed from it all.
ESPACIO The Jewel of Waikiki offers something rare in Honolulu: the experience of a private residence paired with the service and amenities of an exceptional luxury hotel. As Hawaii’s only boutique hotel to hold dual Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond honors for both its accommodations and fine-dining venue, ESPACIO has created an intimate retreat where privacy, personalized service, and effortless indulgence define the experience. Its “Luxury Without Limits” approach draws on the Japanese tradition of Omotenashi, the art of anticipating a guest’s needs before they are expressed. From the moment we arrived, that thoughtful level of service was evident.
Our family’s getaway began the moment we stepped into the private limousine bus. By the time we arrived at ESPACIO, we already knew this would be a very different kind of Hawaiian vacation. Our dedicated butlers, Michael and Wesley, were attentive, knowledgeable and wonderful with the kids, somehow anticipating our needs without ever making the service feel intrusive.
That sense of ease continued throughout our stay. Daily dining is included, turning meals into another effortless part of the experience rather than something to plan around. The kids looked forward to breakfast, while I quickly became a fan of the made-to-order omelets. Poolside lunches of Wagyu burgers and fresh seafood rolls became family favorites, along with the afternoon treats that seemed to appear at exactly the right moment.
ESPACIO’s residential concept is central to its appeal. With just nine suites across nine floors, the property builds privacy in. Guests arrive through a private entrance, are welcomed with traditional leis and chilled champagne, and then take a private elevator directly to their residence.
Each two- or three-bedroom suite is individually designed in rich colors inspired by the ocean and sky surrounding Waikiki. Italian marble, Moroccan metalwork and sophisticated furnishings create a residential atmosphere, while full kitchens and spacious living areas make the suites especially well suited to families traveling together. Floor-to-ceiling glass opens onto ocean-facing lanais, many with private Jacuzzis, creating a seamless connection between the interiors and the spectacular setting. The bathrooms feel more like private wellness retreats, with deep soaking tubs, separate showers, TOTO Washlets, luxurious Japanese cotton towels, and a dry sauna in every suite.
A favorite gathering spot is the rooftop, which sits high above Waikiki, with an infinity pool that seems to disappear into the Pacific horizon. The intimate setting is reserved through private pool reservations, giving families uninterrupted time without the usual crowds associated with a resort pool. We spent some of our favorite hours there simply enjoying time together, taking in the views and watching the light change over the ocean. And when we wanted the beach, it was literally steps away.
ESPACIO makes that transition effortless, too. The bell desk provides beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, sunscreen and bottled water, so there is no need to pack up half the suite before heading across the boulevard.
For my husband and me, however, one of the most memorable moments came after the kids were settled in. ESPACIO arranged a private rooftop Regiis Ova Ossetra caviar service accompanied by champagne, warm buttermilk blinis, chives, shallots, crème fraîche, house-cured egg yolk, smoked salmon pâté, and crispy truffle potato chips. Creating an unexpectedly romantic evening above Waikiki, while watching the sunset together, was a true highlight of our trip.
Our culinary experience continued at Mugen, ESPACIO’s acclaimed tasting menu-style restaurant. The name means “infinity,” an appropriate choice for a restaurant that celebrates hyperseasonal flavors and regional ingredients, creating an elegant, highly refined dining experience. Chef Colin Sato’s menus are thoughtful and beautifully composed, complemented by an impressive beverage program. The sommelier expertly guided us through the experience, and every course lived up to the restaurant’s reputation. More than a hotel restaurant, Mugen is a destination in its own right and a compelling part of the ESPACIO experience.
What ultimately makes ESPACIO so memorable, though, is not any single amenity. It is the feeling of being completely cared for while still having the freedom to experience Waikiki on your own terms. Complimentary airport transfers, valet parking, and house-car service make getting around easier and guests also have access to rental vehicles, a nearby fitness center, and spa services.
You can walk across the street to the beach, spend the afternoon on a private rooftop, explore Honolulu in a house car, enjoy an extraordinary dinner, or simply retreat to your suite and watch the Pacific from your balcony. Everything feels easy, private, and deeply personal.
As our family looked down at the Honolulu coastline from the plane on the way home, we could still picture ESPACIO’s rooftop pool high above Waikiki. It felt almost like an insider’s secret; a private sanctuary in the middle of one of Hawaii’s most vibrant destinations.
