The Hidden Gem of Newport Beach: Newport Theatre Arts Center

By: Jodi Salerno

Nestled atop a scenic bluff overlooking Newport Beach, the Newport Theatre Arts Center (NTAC) has been a cornerstone of the local arts scene since its establishment in 1979. Known for its intimate setting and dedication to high-quality performances, NTAC has charmed audiences for more than four decades. With more than 44 years of productions, this community treasure continues its unwavering mission of bringing the magic of live theater to Orange County.

A History of Transformation

Before NTAC became a thriving hub for performing arts, the building itself had a journey of reinvention. Originally constructed as a Lutheran church, the space was later acquired by Caltrans (California Department of Transportation) as part of a planned freeway project. However, the project was scrapped due to strong community opposition, and the land was transferred to the City of Newport Beach. Recognizing the potential for a cultural landmark, the Newport Beach Arts Commission proposed converting the structure into a theater, leading to the birth of NTAC in 1979.

Since its inception, NTAC has flourished as a beloved venue for local talent and theater enthusiasts alike. It has undergone several renovations to enhance the audience experience, including lobby expansions, seating upgrades, and improved stage facilities. Today, it stands as a prime example of how a community can reclaim and repurpose a space for the arts, preserving both history and creativity.

A Premier Destination for Live Theater

NTAC is known for its diverse and engaging productions, offering a mix of classic plays, modern productions, and beloved musicals. Each season consists of six shows, two musicals and four non-musical productions, providing a well-rounded theatrical experience for the community.

Non-musical tickets are $25, while Musical tickets are $30
Season ticket holders receive one free non-musical ticket, making NTAC an affordable option for regular theatergoers.

The intimate 90-seat theater provides a close-up, immersive experience, ensuring that every show feels personal and captivating.

Additionally, NTAC is bringing back its children's summer camp! In partnership with Acting Academy for Kids (actingacademyforkids.com), the theater will launch a 10-week summer camp program starting in June 2025, offering young performers an opportunity to develop their acting skills in a professional theater setting.

 A Launchpad for Talent

Though primarily a community theater, NTAC has seen its share of notable talent. Actor Eric Anderson, who made his NTAC debut in a 1992 production of The Fantasticks, built a successful career in film, television and Broadway. Radio personality Larry O’Connor also worked in the theater in the early 1980s before pursuing a career in entertainment and media.

While the center does not currently offer formal acting classes, it holds open auditions for its productions, providing local actors with opportunities to gain experience and grow their craft in a professional yet nurturing environment.

A Community Hub for Arts and Philanthropy

NTAC is more than just a theater; it is a pillar of the Newport Beach community. In addition to its regular productions, the venue has hosted charity events and fundraisers that support various causes.

One notable example is the Newport Harbor Home & Garden Tour, which included a luncheon at NTAC to benefit Newport Harbor High School students.

Additionally, the theater offers volunteer opportunities, encouraging residents to get involved in set design, ushering and production assistance. This community-driven approach ensures that NTAC remains a space for creativity, collaboration and giving back.

For all other private event inquiries, such as weddings or large gatherings, requests must be directed to the City of Newport Beach, which oversees all external event bookings at the theater.
