Mayor's Corner: Celebrating a New Chapter of Inclusive Play in Newport Beach
By: Mayor Joe Stapleton
As Mayor of this wonderful city, I have the privilege of witnessing how small acts of courage and leadership can create meaningful change. This was especially true recently, when we celebrated the grand opening of Newport Beachโs first universally accessible playground at San Miguel Park.
This project began with young resident Alexis Portillo, who approached the City Council in 2019 during public comments. Alexis asked if an ADA swing could be installed at Coastal Peak Park so that her disabled sister could enjoy the playground. Her heartfelt request inspired the City not only to add ADA swings at several parks but also to launch plans for the Cityโs first fully accessible playground, at San Miguel Park.
On Wednesday, April 23, the City Council, City staff, and community members celebrated the new playground with a grand opening ceremony. Alexis and her family were able to attend, and she joined us in cutting the ceremonial red ribbon on the playground that resulted from her vision.
The San Miguel Park playground now offers more than 20 accessible play features, along with ADA-compliant paths and parking, ensuring that children of all abilities can experience the joy of play.
It is a reminder that progress often begins at the grassroots level โ with compassion, advocacy, and the courage to speak up. This new playground is not just a recreational space; itโs a symbol of Newport Beachโs commitment to inclusion and community spirit. I encourage you to visit San Miguel Park, at 2200 San Miguel Drive, and see the new playground space for yourself. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when
we listen and collaborate to improve our neighborhoods.
