Newport Beach Mayor Lauren Kleiman
Summer in Newport Beach means long days at the beach, families enjoying the coastline and thousands of visitors making memories along our waterfront. Behind every safe beach day is a dedicated team of professionals working tirelessly to protect the public: our Newport Beach Lifeguards.
The 2026 summer season is already off to a remarkable start. In just the first 10 days of the season, Newport Beach lifeguards performed 526 ocean rescues and more than 12,300 preventive actions. These efforts came during a period of historic south swells, with waves reaching more than 20 feet at The Wedge and drawing large crowds of spectators and surfers.
While rescues often receive attention, preventive actions are one of the most important ways lifeguards keep our beaches safe. By educating visitors, identifying hazards and directing swimmers away from dangerous conditions, lifeguards help prevent emergencies before they happen.
This summer also marks the start of another record-setting Junior Lifeguard season, with 1,500 participants aged 9 to 14 enrolled in the program. For many Newport Beach families, becoming a Junior Guard is a rite of passage. Many participants later return to serve their community as City lifeguards, continuing a tradition that spans generations.
The seven-week program teaches beach safety, rip current awareness, teamwork and basic first aid while helping participants build confidence and leadership skills. Throughout the program, Junior Guards learn the values of S.U.R.F.: Safety, Unity, Respect and Focus. These principles encourage participants to prioritize safety, support their teammates, treat others with kindness and stay focused while having fun.
The Lifeguard Division's commitment to service is also reflected in the legacy of Newport Beach Lifeguard Ben Carlson. In 2014, Ben made the ultimate sacrifice while rescuing a swimmer in distress near 16th Street. His courage and selflessness continue to inspire lifeguards throughout our community.
Today, the Ben Did Go Foundation honors his memory by promoting water safety, supporting lifeguards and encouraging service to others. Ben's legacy serves as a powerful reminder of what it means to answer the call when someone needs help.
We are grateful for the professionalism, dedication and courage of our lifeguards, whose service helps make Newport Beach one of the safest and most enjoyable beach communities in California.
