Duffy chats with captain gary conwell

Last month on Duffy Chats, we welcomed Newport Beach Lifeguard Training Captain and Newport Beach Junior Guards Program Supervisor Gary Conwell. A Newport Beach native, Gary’s connection to the ocean began long before his nearly 30-year lifeguarding career. He spent all seven years as a Newport Beach Junior Guard, making his journey from participant to program leader a true full-circle story.

As one of the founding board members of the Ben Carlson Foundation and a dedicated public servant, Gary shared memories of growing up in Newport Beach, how the Junior Guards program has evolved over the years, and its lasting impact on local youth. We also discussed what today’s families can expect from the program, the valuable life skills it teaches, and why it continues to be one of Newport Beach’s most treasured summer traditions.

Watch the full video and hear Gary’s inspiring story of service, leadership and giving back to the community he has called home his entire life.
