Escape to Conrad Punta de Mita

There is a point in a great beach vacation when you stop checking the time. Breakfast starts a little later, afternoons unfold without much of a plan and dinner is dictated more by the sunset than the clock.

At Conrad Punta de Mita, that feeling came quickly.

Set within the gated community of Litibú, Conrad Punta de Mita sits directly on Litibú Beach in Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit, overlooking the bay and the Pacific beyond. The beachfront resort feels worlds away while remaining an easy escape from Southern California.

Our home for the stay was a one-bedroom oceanfront suite with a private plunge pool and an expansive terrace overlooking the water. It was the kind of room that becomes part of the vacation rather than simply somewhere to return at the end of the day. The suite experience came with another distinctive touch: our own personal concierge, known at Conrad Punta de Mita as a “compadre.” Our compadre became our point person throughout the stay, helping coordinate plans and making sure the details were handled.

Those details began before we even reached the resort, with round-trip airport transportation included in our suite experience. Gourmet buffet breakfast each morning, access to Conrad Spa, a stocked in-room refrigerator, nightly turndown service with a special amenity, a half-day kids club pass and preferred pricing on private pool cabanas are also among the suite benefits.

The property feels expansive, yet the Pacific is almost always part of the view. Our mornings typically began with coffee on our terrace, followed by a walk along the beach and a workout in the resort’s impressive 24-hour fitness center. From there, our days unfolded between the beach and the pools, finding a favorite spot and staying there longer than planned.

Dining proved to be one of the highlights of our stay. One evening took us to Mezquite, the resort's beachfront restaurant, where we dined along the sand as the sun disappeared over the Pacific. With fresh seafood, steaks and dishes prepared over an open fire, the menu was a perfect match for the beachfront setting, where we lingered through sunset with the ocean just steps away.

Our dinner at CODEX was an entirely different experience. Designed as an immersive culinary journey, CODEX draws inspiration from the region and its ingredients, transforming dinner into something discovered course by course. The evening invited us to slow down and experience the stories, flavors and traditions behind what was being served, easily becoming one of our most memorable meals of the trip.

The slower pace continued at Conrad Spa, designed to embrace the beauty and tranquility of its natural surroundings. The expansive treatment menu includes traditional indoor services as well as treatments beneath private thatched domes, offering the feeling of being immersed in nature while remaining comfortable and secluded. The outdoor spa area also features a pool, Jacuzzi and cold plunge, with guided cold-plunge experiences available, along with the heat and steam of the Temazcal lodge.

Beyond traditional treatments, the spa offers spiritual ceremonies and experiences influenced by the traditions of the region's indigenous peoples. I experienced the Marakame Experience, named for the spiritual leaders, healers and ceremonial guides within Wixárika culture. The ritual began with an energy cleanse using burning copal incense and sahumerio herbs, followed by exfoliation, nutrient-rich copal clay and a full-body massage incorporating detoxifying techniques and aromatherapy. Unlike a traditional spa treatment, the ceremonial quality, native ingredients and traditions created a deeper connection to the destination

We were perfectly content staying within the resort for nearly our entire visit. We left the property only once, and it was to Cachasol Farm Distillery, where a 90-minute experience introduced us to the world of agave through tequila, food and the farm's story. Cachasol Tequila was founded by longtime beverage industry veteran James “Monty” Montero and is crafted in partnership with fifth-generation Master Distiller Jaime Villalobos Sauza.

Monty spent the entire experience with our group, which made our visit especially memorable, as we learned he doesn’t typically stay from beginning to end. He is one of those people who instinctively understands hospitality—warm, engaging and genuinely interested in his guests. As he walked us through the property and shared Cachasol's story, his enthusiasm for what they have created was evident.

We began with a Cachasol Skinnyish Margarita at the hand-built, open-air Cachashade Bar before touring the production spaces. Along the way, we learned about the differences between tequila and raicilla and how agave varieties, production methods and the surrounding environment influence flavor. Cachasol also produces its own raicilla on the farm, allowing us to taste the lesser-known agave spirit where it is made.

The tasting continued with Cachasol Blanco and Epic Strength tequilas, paired with cooked agave and chef-prepared bites, before concluding with a farm-to-table meal from Cachasol's open-fire kitchen. The combination of food, agave and natural surroundings made the afternoon feel less like a traditional tequila tasting and more like an immersion into this corner of Mexico.

It was interactive, informative and, most importantly, a lot of fun. It’s an experience I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita or Punta Mita. And even if you don’t drink alcohol, like me, it’s well worth doing.

By the time we returned to Conrad, slipping back into resort life felt effortless. Perhaps that is what Conrad Punta de Mita does best. There are plenty of ways to fill a day, but no pressure to fill it. You can seek out experiences, linger over dinner, spend an afternoon at the spa or simply watch the Pacific from your own plunge pool.

For those of us who live near the ocean, a beautiful beach alone isn't necessarily enough to make a destination feel special. It is everything surrounding it, from thoughtful service to memorable meals and the luxury of realizing you haven't looked at the time in hours.

While our stay was about slowing down and enjoying the resort, Conrad Punta de Mita is equally suited to a romantic getaway, family vacation or destination celebration. With spacious suites and residences, family amenities, beachfront grounds and settings for weddings and special events, it is a resort designed for many reasons to get away—and one that makes it remarkably easy to stay awhile.
